you broke them in, part two.
—
- yael naim - toxic (britney spears). guilty or not, interpretations of pop music songs end up being my favorite cover songs. i’ve no idea where i found this one, but it’s delicate and perfect.
- cocorosie - turn me on (kevin lyttle). i’ve heard this live each time i’ve been seen cocorosie live, and it wasn’t until recently that i realized it wasn’t just some obscure b-side, but instead a cover of a really kind of terrible soca/hip-hop ballad. i was anxious about including this version because it’s from a live recording, but it was pretty clean, and an easy mix out of before the crowd kicked in.
- i’ve seen it all - bony prince billy (bjork). beautiful version of a beautiful song. i thought for sure this song would dictate a primarily singer-songwriter focus on this mix, but my music-selector impulse had a different idea.
- field music - don’t pass me by (the beatles). this song kind of blows my mind: field music is singing starr’s “don’t pass me by” from the white album set to the tune of “don’t let me down” from let it be. i can’t even.
- sonic youth - i’m not there (bob dylan). if you know me well, you know that i loathe sonic youth. but i love dylan and this cover is phenomenal, despite the weird dump-truck lo-fi-rock-distortion that happens when it begins. it’s perfect.
- bill coleman - runaway (kanye west). this is my first encounter with bill coleman’s music, and i’m unsure that i care for his voice, but this song grabbed me as a nice bookend to britney’s “toxic.” also, the lyrics are kind of amazing.
- jonsi - time to pretend (mgmt). despite not listening to them or really even playing them out anymore, select mgmt tracks make me wistful and nostalgic (perhaps for my electric feel DJ night, rip). another favorite.
- evelyn evelyn - love will tear us apart (joy division) joy division! on ukelele! evelyn evelyn is the amanda palmer circus-style side project with “siamese twin” sisters evelyn and evelyn; this is regretfully one of the few listenable tracks on the record.
- mr. little jeans - single ladies (beyonce). all the single ladies, all the single ladies. i don’t even remember where i first heard this but i love it.
- chromatics - running up that hill (kate bush). i didn’t intend to go electro, but i did. this is a terrific kate bush cover.
- yo la tengo - dreams (fleetwood mac). go figure there are numerous versions of “dreams” to choose from, but basically just one good cover (the langely schools music project one) of my daddy fleetwood and mama nicks namesake, “rhiannon.” i couldn’t even pick at first, but felt the fuzzy lo-fi quality of yo la tengo paired well with the sonic youth dylan track, and that i’d likely squeeze in another “dreams” elsewhere on future mixes.
- amy milan - i will follow you into the dark (postal service). some songs just feel like end tracks. it is usually something unexplainable, like the rhythm of bookending a mix is a learned art from our mixtape days. for whatever reason, despite my unfamiliarity with amy’s work and my disinterest in anything that comes out of ben gibbard’s mouth since my salad days, this song is twee and cute and closes out this mix nicely.
